While the Cambridge course is broad and exposes students to the whole of Engineering in the third and fourth year students specialise into one or more Engineering Areas. The Engineering Area(s) that appears on a student's degree certificate depends on the modules chosen during the course. These are also relevant to accreditation of the degree by professional bodies.

Chemical Engineering is now its own completely separate four year course.
Manufacturing Engineering is a two-year, self-contained specialisation starting in Year 3.
A number of two-year specialisations are available in Years 3 and 4 of the Engineering Tripos.
